What is U.S. UMAP's Mission? (continued) Open Doors, the leading reference for statistics on U.S. study
abroad, reports that while the total number of U.S. students going abroad has increased steadily since 1993, the
percentage of those students going to Asia has decreased.
Where there have been concerted efforts, however, such as in Japan and China, the percentage has actually increased.
Correspondingly, the number of American students studying in the remainder of East Asia and Southeast Asia has
dropped by over 11%. Reports from the field suggest that numbers in these countries have continued to drop since
the last year of the survey.
UMAP is an effective means of redressing these declines. It holds as its central tenet that by addressing the practical
barriers to student exchange the number of U.S. students in Asia will in time increase.
